Family Day is approaching fast, leaving households with a short time to prepare. If you haven't decided how to celebrate yet, here are a few last-minute ideas:

Have a scavenger hunt

Although it's still winter, the days are getting slightly longer and the temperature is rising just a bit. Take advantage of the weather and organize a small outdoor scavenger hunt. Scatter four or five treats around the yard, come up with a simple list of clues and watch as your child has fun searching through the outdoors.

If it's still too cold and snowy to search outside, take the scavenger hunt indoors. A household search might even be more challenging, as there are lots of creative places to hide things. Sneak your child's favourite cookies into the vegetable crisper or hide a new toy in the laundry room.

Make a time capsule

This tip, provided by Huffington Post Canada, is a cute way to create memories you and yours can reflect on years later. Have your children write letters about their lives. If they can't think of anything, suggest they write about school, their best friend or what they hope for the future. Then, send your children to select a cherished toy or small object.

Next, find and decorate an old shoe box. Store your capsule contents inside and hide the box in the closet for five years. Then, on Family Day 2022, take it out and reminisce with your children. You all might be surprised at how much you've changed in half a decade.

Hold a family concert

If your household is full of budding superstars, grab a pretend microphone - also known as a hairbrush - and let them strut their stuff. Help your children set a stage, pick out costumes and create a set list. If you really want to get involved, pretend to be the opening act and get the crowd of toys warmed up for your child's stellar performance.

Visit a museum

If you won't have time to create your own celebration at home, grab a local newspaper or search online to find some Family Day events in your area. Check out the museums first - this way, your child can have fun and learn something new. For instance, the Royal Tyrell Museum in Alberta has a great line up of Family Day activities, and admission is free on Monday, Feb. 20. Meanwhile, the Canada Nature Museum, which is normally closed on Mondays, will open its doors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 20. Families near Regina, Saskatchewan, can check out the Waskimo Winter Fest. Calgary, Toronto and many other cities have a whole list of activities you and your loved ones can participate in.

No matter where you live, there's bound to be something fun happening this Family Day weekend.
