We all get in a bad mood every once in a while, but you shouldn't put up with a persistent negative attitude. Rather than becoming a slave to your emotions, you should take steps to improve your outlook and mental health. As the new year has just begun, now is a good time to focus your energy on becoming a more positive person. Here are some changes you can make to improve your attitude in 2017 and beyond:

1. Take care of your health

Ever hear of the term "runners high?" This refers to the emotional shift many people experience after strenuous, repetitive exercise. Physical activity causes the brain to release endorphins, chemicals that lead to happiness and act as natural pain killers.

Over time, consistent exercise does wonders for increasing your overall mood. According to Greatist, some people see the same benefits from exercise as they do from antidepressants. Additionally, exercise also increases production of the chemical norepinephrine, which helps the brain adapt to stressful situations. If you're feeling consistently blue or anxious, grab your sweatpants, water bottle and track shoes and get that heart rate up.

2. Speak positively

It's true: the more negatively you speak, the more glum you feel. As author Roxanne Gay pointed out when writing for Oprah.com, focusing on the bad things forces you to miss the good. If you're constantly complaining about your office, you miss the spectacular view on your commute in to work. If you're always whining about your old house, you miss the kindness of your neighbours. Speak positively, and you'll notice more good things in your life.

Speaking positively reminds you of the good things in life.Speaking positively reminds you of the good things in life.

3. Create a mantra

Fake it till you make it isn't just a catchy saying - it works. Sometimes, all you need to do is repeat something enough times before you believe it. Mantras don't work for material things - you can't talk your way into a higher salary, after all - but they make a great pep talk when you're getting ready in the morning. Look in the mirror and tell yourself that you're smart and capable every day, and you'll approach life with far more confidence.

4. Start journaling

Writing is one of the best ways to process your emotions. Take some time in the morning to analyze how you feel about the day ahead, or write at night and go through the events of the past 24 hours. Journaling is private, so you're free to express yourself without fear of judgment or criticism. This allows you to be honest with yourself, which is great for alleviating anxiety and elevating your mood.
