New President and Chief Executive Officer

The Board of Directors of GMS (Group Medical Services) is pleased to announce the appointment of John Salmond as President and Chief Executive Officer of GMS and GMS Insurance Inc., effective November 20, 2016.

“We completed an intense national search process to recruit the best candidate for the leadership of GMS,” said Board Chair Bill Semchuk. “John’s experience and knowledge are impressive, but it’s his passion for the business, and for the unique value of GMS as an organization, that made him our clear choice for President.”

John has been part of the GMS executive team since August 7, 2013, when he was appointed Vice President, Sales & Marketing. During the past three years, he’s been a major force behind:

  • refreshing the GMS brand, including launching the GMS Living Well social media channels

  • introducing a successful new product, Replacement Health Coverage

  • continuing the GMS legacy of giving back to the community through: a major donation to the GMS Cardiac Rhythm Device Clinic at Regina’s General Hospital; support for a range of healthcare-focused charitable organizations across Saskatchewan; and implementation of a staff volunteer policy

  • critical technology investments such as a responsive website to continually improve customer and broker service

  • nearly doubling the number of broker and advisor partners selling GMS products; and

  • significantly increasing sales across all lines of business

With over 28 years of senior sales and marketing experience, John has dedicated the past 22-plus years to the insurance industry. Before joining GMS, he was at Manulife Financial. Leading a number of product and marketing development teams, John honed his focus on consistent branding, expanding digital footprints, marketing to win the ‘hearts and minds’ of customers and brokers, along with implementing initiatives to deliver exceptional customer and broker service.

“GMS has a compelling vision – giving back to healthcare in Saskatchewan,” John says. “We have great people who do their job for the greater good. Our small size means we’re nimble - we move fast enough to provide great customer experiences and real value. We also have strong industry partners who share our commitment to customer service. We look forward to continuing to expand our presence nationally and meeting the healthcare needs in the markets we serve.”

John has a B.A. in Political Science from Wilfrid Laurier and is an active member of LIMRA, an international research, learning and development organization for the financial services industry.  John is currently serving on the Saskatchewan Divisional Advisory Board for the Arthritis Society.

John takes over from David Blodgett, who retired as GMS President and CEO October 31, 2016.
