Senior Executive Bios
John is the President and Chief Executive Officer of GMS and GMS Insurance Inc. with full responsibility for the overall leadership and direction of the companies' operations.
A seasoned sales and marketing professional for more than 28 years, John has dedicated more than 22 of those years to the insurance industry. He joined the GMS Executive team as Vice President, Sales & Marketing and served in that role for more than three years before being appointed President. As head of GMS Sales and Marketing, he was a driving force behind launching the GMS living well social media channels, adding to the GMS product lineup with the introduction of Replacement Health Coverage, investing in technology to enhance service to customers and brokers and continuing GMS' legacy of giving back to the community.
Prior to joining GMS, John was at Manulife Financial where he led a number of product and marketing development teams. There he honed his focus on consistent branding, expanding digital footprints, marketing to win the 'hearts and minds' of customers and brokers and implementing initiatives to deliver exceptional customer and broker service.
John has a B.A. in Political Science from Wilfrid Laurier. He is currently serving on the Saskatchewan Divisional Advisory Board for the Arthritis Society.
Rick is GMS' Vice President of Information Technology. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, Rick is a member of GMS’ senior leadership team with full accountability for GMS' information technology (IT) strategy.
As Vice President, Information Technology, Rick provides strategic and operational leadership of all aspects of GMS’ technology function in support of the corporate vision and goals. This includes planning, IT customer relationship, IT processes, IT innovation, architecture, application services, information management, and technology infrastructure. Rick leads and directs the organization’s technological capability which includes the design, development, integration and evolution of information technology applications and technical software, hardware, and data components providing support of all business outcomes and business. Rick is also responsible for the effective use and maintenance of the facilities at GMS’ Head Office working in partnership with the SaskCentral Services.
An IT professional with a career spanning over 27 years in both public and private sectors, Rick has substantial technical and business experience. At a senior leadership level, he has been responsible for managing highly technical professionals, strategic planning, technical architecture, application architecture, and system engineering strategies. In addition, he has hands-on experience developing and designing software, networks, and databases in a variety of environments.
Rick is active in the community as a longtime member of the Air Cadet League, was a member of Saskatchewan Crown Corporations Chief Information Officers Committee and a member of the advisory committee for the Council of Innovation and Commercialization at the Conference Board of Canada.
Bal is GMS' Vice President of Operations, reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer. She is responsible for GMS’ administration, call centre, health and travel claims and quality improvement teams, as well as overseeing the human resources function.
Before her appointment to the senior leadership team, Bal was Director of Human Resources for GMS. She brings over 25 years of senior expertise to her Vice President's role, including 18 years with Lloyd’s TSB Group, a United Kingdom bank with international operations, and three years with Viterra, the international Agribusiness company. During her time with these organizations, Bal oversaw major business transformation and change management initiatives to support business acquisitions and integrate operations. She also honed her expertise in talent and performance management, employee engagement and strategic HR planning.
Bal is a graduate of the University of London, with a B.A. in Economics and Social Policy, and a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. She is also a past board member with the Regina Food Bank.
Sarah is GMS' Vice President of Sales and Marketing. A member of the senior management team, she reports to the President and Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for GMS’ national sales and marketing operations.
Sarah began her insurance career as a broker. She completed her Bachelor of Commerce Degree at the University of Saskatchewan, majoring in marketing and human resources. After graduation, Sarah joined Saskatchewan Blue Cross, starting in the group sales area. She then moved into human resources, taking on a series of increasingly senior roles while earned designations as a Human Resource Professional (CPHR) and a Compensation Management Specialist (CMS). Immediately prior to joining GMS, Sarah led Individual Product and Sales development at Saskatchewan Blue Cross, overseeing individual product development, marketing and sales through all distribution channels, as well as customer service and administration.
Sarah enjoys volunteering with a variety of community groups and activities, including Habitat for Humanity, MS Walk, United Way and Canadian Blood Services.
Kathy is GMS' Vice President, Finance and Broker Administration. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, Kathy is a member of the senior leadership team. She is responsible for GMS' accounting, finance and treasury operations, as well as overseeing administration of the network of brokers selling GMS products across Canada.
Kathy's career spans more than 16 years in financial services. She has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree majoring in accounting from the University of Regina as well as her Chartered Accountant (CA) and Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designations. From a senior auditor position with KPMG Canada, Kathy's move to GMS as a Financial Analyst launched her career in the insurance industry. Following a brief period as a senior Auditor for Saskatchewan Government Insurance, Kathy returned to GMS as Manager and then Director of Finance and Broker Administration before advancing to her current position.
Kathy's current volunteer activities focus on children’s sports and arts programs. A supporter of Toastmasters International, she is a past president of her local Toastmasters club.
Thomas is GMS' Vice-President of Pricing and Actuarial Services. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, Thomas is a member of the senior leadership team. He is responsible for pricing across all product lines, underwriting, Enterprise Risk Management, as well as GMS’ business analytics and reporting functions.
Thomas has more than a decade of experience in the insurance industry. After completing his Actuarial Science degree at the University of Regina, Thomas joined the Co-operators Group of Companies. There he took on increasing actuarial responsibilities, from managing junior staff contributing to pricing modeling and market analysis for Co-operators Life to leading a team of professionals as Senior Director responsible for Risk and Capital Management for the Co-operators Group. During this time, Thomas also earned professional designations as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA).
Thomas enjoys volunteering his time as a youth soccer coach and to the Regina Food Bank.
